Asbestos, The Survey Guide

The HSE have issued a revised guidance document describing the methodologies and responsibilities for conducting asbestos surveys. HSG 264 Asbestos: The Survey Guide, is available as a free download at http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg264.pdf. This heavily illustrated publication replaces and expands on MDHS100, surveying, sampling and assessment of asbestos-containing materials. It is aimed at people carrying out asbestos surveys and people with specific responsibilities for managing asbestos in non-domestic premises under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. The book covers competence and quality assurance and surveys, including: survey planning, carrying out surveys, the survey report and the dutyholder's use of the survey information. It includes extensive appendices and references and it complements and supports other guidance on managing asbestos.

Matthew Walker (Quality and Health and Safety Director) says; ‘I am delighted to see the introduction of this document. It provides clear guidance and takes us further along the line to ensuring that people are protected from exposure to asbestos. Deaths from asbestos related diseases remain the biggest occupational killer in the UK and we must continue to be vigilant and manage asbestos effectively.’

Please contact BES Consulting for further information and any impact the new guidance may have for your continuing regulatory compliance. This is especially important for people managing buildings, maintenance personnel and any activity that may disturb the fabric of buildings.
